The Scientific Computing Center has played a major role in these endeavors by providing the
necessary computer support and assistance. The center's involvement has included projects
such as Doppler radar data processing, air traffic control simulation and modeling, flight
operations software design, airport management software design, and virtual reality and
expert systems development.
Through its mission, the Scientific Computing Center supports the continuing research
and educational efforts of UND, as well as the city, state and nation. Our vision is to
adapt our extensive computing power to a multitude of specific challenges. In an effort to
meet these challenges, the center has assembled an accomplished staff of computer scientists,
engineers, systems managers, analysts, programmers, technicians and operators. These
specialists provide all the programming networking and operations support necessary for
outside partners to optimized their applications on the supercomputer.
Completed in 1992, this state-of-the-art, $8.4 million facility was designed especially
for advanced research. Connected to the rest of the complex by a glass skywalk, the
building contains modern laboratories, conference rooms and a 6,400-square-foot computer,
room. Designed specifically to house supercomputers, the fully secured, climate-controlled
room is penetrated on the second level by a glass tube that provides visitors an excellent
view of the center's computer equipment.
