The four computer labs in Streibel Hall contain a wide variety of computing power. All lab computers are networked to the Scientific Computer Center in Clifford Hall, and from there, to the rest of campus. Students can access their assignments online, as well as participate in instructor-led class sessions. Computer Science students also receive 24/7 access to all four labs.
General Purpose Windows Lab
This lab is installed with 32 high-end Windows7 machines running on a local network. Equipped with modern graphics cards and widescreen, high resolution displays, these systems are ideal for a variety of multimedia, programming and other applications. Microsoft Office 2010 and Visual Studio 2010 (a platform for software programming) headline the assorted software installed for student use.
Instructional Windows Lab
This lab is installed with 29 high-end Windows7 machines running on a local network which are setup in a more lecture friendly orientation. This layout permits instructors to combine traditional lecture and lab techniques in the same class period, allowing for instant hands-on experience with the lecture material. Also equipped with Microsoft Office 2010 and Visual Studio 2010, this lab’s software is further augmented with a variety of software engineering tools to assist students in designing new programs.
Advanced Linux Lab
This lab is installed with a wide array of different systems and network topologies designed to meet the needs of a variety of upper level courses and graduate studies. The lab contains a row of 13 Linux locally networked machines equipped with high-end graphics cards supporting widescreen, high resolution displays for graphics and multimedia development. It also houses a row of eight Linux machines which are configured to their own private network for advanced networking courses. This computer lab also houses the CrayOwulf, the Computer Science department’s 20 processor Beowulf cluster.
General Purpose Linux Lab
This lab is installed with 36 high-end Linux machines running on a local network. Designed primarily for use by undergraduate programming courses and independent work, this lab’s software is exclusively geared toward programming.
